Since 1882, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church has been a place for members of the Greater Nanticoke area to come together and worship as part of a strong, loving community. Our worship expresses the unity of the people of God and their continuity with Christians across the ages. In the liturgical tradition are the gestures, songs, and words by which Christians have identified themselves and each other.

We’re always happy to see you and warmly welcome visitors.

About

OUR CHURCH

When you are sitting in a pew at our church you become a full participant in our liturgy. Worship is the work of the people, and at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, we understand that our worship is a holy work we create with God and with each other.

Our services are aimed to engage you in an experience that will stay with you for a long time. It is not just our worship, but it is our unique community that makes us worth the visit and for many, it is what calls them to stay. We have remained close with our neighborhood through many changes over the years since our founding in 1882. We hear our call to remain in this place and always serve God's people. Get to know us.

We would like to get to know you!

To gather with God's people in united adoration of the Father

is as necessary to the Christian life as prayer.

IN PERSON WORSHIP TO BEGIN

Dear Friends,

Back in mid-March when COVID-19 began to spread we had no idea that it would impact our lives as it has. We are now realizing that returning to church needs to happen in phases, taking the recommendations from the ELCA as well as the CDC into consideration for the health and safety of our members.

When Will We Open?

Luzerne County will enter the Governor’s green phase of reopening on Friday June 19th, 2020.  The Church Council has made the decision to return to in person worship on Sunday, June 21st, 2020 with Pastor Rothrock leading us. We will offer both the 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM services.

What to Expect.

What you also need to be aware of will be the initial changes to the worship service as recommended by the ELCA. Upon entering we ask that you wear a mask. We ask that you gather in reverent silence and enjoy the organ prelude.  Family units will be seated at least 6 foot apart from other individuals or family units. While singing has been strongly discouraged, we will limit ourselves to 2 hymns and the parts of the liturgy will be sung by the cantor on behalf of the congregation. We ask that you remain in your seats for the peace. Again, while the distribution of the sacrament is strongly discouraged at this time, we will implement what we believe are safe practices for distribution. Following the consecration and Lord's Prayer, the pastor will offer the benediction. We will ask you to dismiss row by row, making your way forward one by one to receive the wafer and pre-filled communion glass which will be placed on a table near the chancel rail, two baskets will then be available - one to receive the wine cup and one to receive the paper wafer container.  Please leave by the suggested door at that time.  We ask that you not congregate in the back of the church or in the gathering room either before or after the service. We are implementing these changes to ensure the integrity of worship as well as the safety of our parishioners.

What Will Be Next?

As we move forward, we will monitor the situation and ease back into worship as we are accustomed as conditions allow. We hope you have taken advantage of our online services that have been provided.  We plan to continue offering online services for those who are not ready to return to the sanctuary as of yet, we truly understand your concerns. Please feel free to share these services with others as we continuing to see our viewing audience grow.

Please note Pastor Kaufman is willing to begin home visits if you would like a visit. Please contact her directly at 570-881-2371 to schedule an appointment. Our continued thoughts and prayers are with you all.
